Kepler is NASA's Discovery mission to find Earth-sized, habitable exoplanets. The spacecraft, in an Earth-trailing orbit, yields 165,000 simultaneous light curves of Galactic and extra-Galactic sources over a 108 square degree field in the Cygnus-Lyra direction, with uninterrupted cadences of 1- and 30-minutes over a nominal mission lifetime of 3.5 years. The Kepler Guest Observer Office is tasked with maximizing the quality and depth of Kepler parallel science, exploiting the unique properties of this space-based telecope to impact multiple areas of astrophysics outside the core program of planet transits.

The Guest Observer Office is seeking a high-quality research scientist to join this endeavour. The successful candidate will contribute and lead independent research based upon Kepler data or supplemental investigations, and collaborate with the international Kepler Guest Observer community with the specific role of instrument/data expert, advising teams and contributing to the development and fruition of Kepler science programs. See http://keplergo.arc.nasa.gov for further information on Kepler and the Guest Observer Office.

The Guest Observer Office is embedded within the Kepler Science Operations Center at the NASA Ames Reseach Center, situated in the Bay Area of California, and is funded through a cooperative agreement between NASA and the Bay Area Enviromental Research Institute. The successful candidate will work closely with the Kepler Science Office and Science Operations.

Candidates with familiarity of high-precision CCD photometry, time-series analysis and/or light curve modeling will be particularly valued. An appreciation of the importance of oral and written communication is critical. The successful candidate will have well-developed interpersonal and diplomacy skills, will be attentive to details, pro-active, available and a team player. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent career experience in astronomy or astrophysics.

Applicants should provide a resume, three professional references and a statement of research experience and interests either electronically or by post to Dr Martin Still at the address above. The initial appointment will be for two years with continuation thereafter dependant on future funding.
